Weight Loss and Self-Esteem Issues: Psychological Effects of Obesity

March 9th, 2010

There are many issues pertaining to obese that need to be addressed. One of those of course is the affect it can have on your physical health but your emotional/mental health is also a main concern.

Effects on the Mind and Emotions

Obesity and overweight appearances probably has the mot effect on children than it does on adults. However, both children and adults share similar feelings of insecurity and worthlessness.

They often feel very unattractive. They also feel very unloved and rejected. However, this is not just a handicap that is limited to playground teasing.

When they grow to be adults they might experience social anxiety and/or pressure on the job. Maybe they will not succeed as much as the next person because of how they feel on the inside and it reflects how they perform at work.

The other possibility is that overweight and obese people might be overly-driven at work. This is to make up for how they feel inadequate socially and have very few friends. They may also be single for long periods of time and/or settle into a less than satisfying marriage where their partner does not appreciate them.

They might get the raises and the promotions at times and even the envy of their peers. However, this is not always the case.

Sometimes they are passed up because they are not fit or shaped in the right way. This is often the case if they are working for a huge corporation for which image is very important. This may also be the case if they are in the field of politics in which physical appearance is a must.

Obesity affects the mind and emotions at any age. Severely overweight people may be discriminated against at times too. They also might experience problems everywhere they go related to trying to fit in.

For instance, the seats at movie theatres might be too small for them. Either that or they might be very embarrassed to even show up at a beach in even the most modest swimsuit attire.

They are often plagued with the thoughts that they are not up to acceptable fitness standards. Therefore, they might isolate themselves and shut them selves out.

They are often very depressed and are unable to even have meaningful friendships with peers. They might never adjust socially as well as other people their age-their peers and they often are made fun of.

The Solution

You might think that feeling better about yourself starts with how you feel about yourself on the outside. However, it does not. It starts with how you feel about yourself on the inside.

Therefore, along with any exercise or diet plan you create, you also need a mental health plan. This will provide for you a balance sense of self-worth and will be the fastest path to a greater sense of self-worth.

In other words, how you feel about yourself is not entirely about physical appearance. It also is not about how well in shape you may be. However, your physical and mental health may depend upon you losing weight. Therefore, seek whatever avenue you can to better yourself.

Summary of ‘5 Small Changes to Help you Lose Weight’

March 4th, 2010

I just read a good article that I saw online called ‘5 changes to help you Lose Weight.’ The beginning of this very profound wisdom (yet very simple and basic) shares a brief intro of how a many began to make small changes in order to lose weight.

This desire to find a way to lose weight was ignited by a brief but significant confrontation by his girlfriend. The love of his life basically told him to just stop complaining about it and just do something about it.

That something for this man (Tim Kassouf) that helped him lose 45 pounds started by just simply make small changes in his diet. One of the most significant of these changes he made was to drink water instead of soda, as he was at 10 colas a day at one time-and that equals 1,400 calories.

Another major change was that he ate a 12-ounce bag of Doritos. He put a stop to this as he altered his entire snack routine. What he did was very simple. He just took a handful of Doritos out of the bag and then put the rest away, and that’s all he ate.

After this he made five other significant changes: 1% milk in place of whole milk, half a bagel in place of a whole bagel, chocolate yogurt or Popsicle instead of ice cream, latte with skim milk versus with whole milk, and 20-minute walk versus no exercise at all.

A further explanation about these changes as well as other ones Tim made are also presented in this article. This is brought to you in an attempt to help you feel less overwhelmed about the altering of diet in lifestyle needed to lose weight.

Start out small and work your way up. That is the best advice anyone can give especially for people who try to put unrealistic expectations on themselves.

News Release: World’s Heaviest Man Gets Bypass Surgery

February 23rd, 2010

You may have heard about Paul Mason in the news before. He is the world’s heaviest man weighing at about 700 pounds. A few days ago he received gastric bypass surgery in order to set himself on the right path towards losing weight.

This is after already losing over 280 pounds. He originally did weight 980 pounds overall, and this weight loss was necessary so that he could undergo this gastric bypass procedure.

By the way, for those of you who do not know gastric bypass surgery is a type of procedure that cuts off a person’s stomach so he or she can become fuller faster. (Okay so it’s not quite this simple but this is the simplest explanation there is for this process.)

Already he has accomplished an amazing feat by losing more weight than the average man even puts on. Now he is on his way to become more fit and trim and this stomach surgery is one step towards that.

Now, does having a smaller stomach mean he is going to be on “Easy Street?” No, not at all! People who have undergone this procedure still have the tendency to gain weight if they eat too much.

They also are more easily affected by alcohol and sugar. Therefore, they often have to be on a little bit stricter of a diet.

Furthermore, they need to find a way to remain active. Exercise can make them heart healthy and tones their muscles while burning fat.

This man, Paul Mason, who is the largest in the world right now already, is writing his story about how he lost so much weight so far. For him it was a matter of life and death but still is a great lesson to all people who need encouragement.

Just imagine what he would like if he only weight about 150 to 200 pounds! No one who has not seen him in awhile will be able to recognize him.

Paul Mason Begins to Write his Weight Loss Story

February 18th, 2010

At one time Paul Mason, who lately was coined the heaviest/fattest man in the world, used to consume 20,000 calories. That is eight times what a man normally eats in a day.

You probably have heard that before, and maybe you have even heard this-that a wall from his apartment was knocked down to get him out. He was carried out by firemen once when he needed to go to the hospital.

He was at times only the second heaviest man, next to Manuel Uribe of Mexico who used to weight 1,200 pounds. However, Mason became the number one heaviest person after Uribe lost half of his weight.

Just this past week Mason has just received gastric bypass surgery, and already he had accomplished a great feat within the year leading up to this operation. He lost over 280 pounds already so that he could drop down to 700 pounds to undergo this stomach reduction procedure.

Paul Mason just began writing his story which he hopes will be quite the inspiration to other people. He has about three weeks worth of material already and he is planning to share it to the world in a book that will at some point be published for people to read.

It would be nice to know more of his story now. However, suppose that would spoil the ending of his book wouldn’t it? It should be out within the next couple of years I am sure.

For now though you probably can gain inspiration by the fact that he already had lost over 280 pounds. After all, that is about the equivalent to what the average man even weights right now.

Of course, his situation may be a little less typical. However, it does not stop the fact that many people are already inspired by his story and perhaps so will many more people be soon.

How Time Leads to Successful Weight Loss

February 11th, 2010

You probably have heard the sayings “time is of the essence” or “time heals all wounds.” Well, a new saying could possibly be applied to weight loss. That is, that “time sheds unwanted pounds.”
It is true.

Taking your time is the only way that you will be able to truly lose weight and keep off those excess pounds. This is also the only way to ensure adjustments in your energy and metabolism levels.

This gradual change is often a result of dedication to making healthy dieting, exercising, and lifestyle choices. Of course, this is easier said than done. That is why many people make an effort to make weight loss more fun.

For instance, maybe instead of jogging or doing aerobics they might rather participate in a team sport in which they would run quite a bit. Better yet, they might just mix up their exercise routines in order to keep it interesting.

As far as food is concerned, many people who are on a healthy diet will find more creative ways to prepare meals. You would be surprised for instance at how many low fat and low carb options are available to people nowadays.

Furthermore, if you are trying to cut down on salt and sugar countless options are open to you to help you with this. For instances, what about honey instead of sugar? You would be surprised also how the use of onion or garlic can cut down the amount of salt you use when cooking.

I know some of these tips because I myself have applied them to my own life. Furthermore, I read these from some of the latest weight loss news and research resources that are available today. You can take advantage of this advice and let us know how it has affected your life. The hope is that you life will be changed.

Corrections for Exercisers (From “5 Exercises You’re Doing Wrong”)

February 7th, 2010

I just read a post online about “5 Exercises You’re Doing Wrong.” The title caught my eye so I thought I’d find out what it says. This is perfect information for anyone who according to the writer of this article has been exercising your butt off for weeks and not seeing any results from your workout.

I am always a little bit skeptical of new information I read online. However, this advice may actually work if I actually take the time to try it.

For instance, people who read this article are informed that they might sometimes be positioning themselves wrong when they perform squats. For this exercise they suggest standing six inches in front of a bench and lower onto the bench. This helps make sure your posture is correct.

A further explanation is provided in this article of squats as well as the following exercises: Lunges, sit-ups, leg lifts, and push-ups. A deeper explanation is provided by the writer of the original article, but for now you are provided with a summary of what you are doing wrong.

For instance, you are warned that if you do lunges improperly you can injure your knees. However, doing them right can provide you with great benefits, such as toning the quads, buttocks, abdominal, and hamstring muscles.

The correct way to do this would be to start with the feed apart, moving one leg forward, and bending at the knee. The entire time your body should remain straight and your knee should be bent at a 90 degree angle.

Sit-ups of course are another exercise that people perform that leaves much room for error. The mistake people make is using their neck and arms too much, and this can cause strain or injury or it can reduce effectiveness this exercise would normally have on the abdominal core.

Another great exercise that people often do wrong is leg lifts, and thus do not see as fast of results on the abs as they would like. The correct way do to this is to place your hands under your buttocks or lower back. This will help reduce unnecessary stress.

An additional tip regarding five exercises people often do wrong is that which should be applied while performing sit-ups. Your body should remain in a straight line (straight as a board) while doing so for maximum safety and effectiveness

Why you Feel Hungry Even though you are Not

February 3rd, 2010

If you are attempting to lose weight fast-or at least faster than before-you may be curious as to what makes you hungry. That is, what makes you hungry even if you have just eaten not too long ago.

There are several triggers of hunger that include the following:

Routine-Just like anything else you do, eating is a habit. Therefore, even if you may have by chance eaten a late breakfast for example you might still be hungry at your regular lunchtime. You are just used to eating at certain times and so you do.

Advertisements-This is another great example of routine, but also of the power of suggestion. That Burger King ad, for instance, (and no offense to this popular fast food chain) makes your mouth salivate. It makes you think that is what you need right now.

Tradition-Sometimes we are so accustomed to thinking we have to devour every course of a large meal. This is the reason why some people might order a pie or cake at a restaurant even though they are already stuffed from eating a humongous portion of food.

Aroma-This is a huge one. If you have ever eaten food after telling someone who is preparing it just 15 minutes ago that you are not hungry this is why. The smell of delicious and sometimes fattening foods causes people to think they are hungry.

Alcohol-Often it seems that drinking too much and eating too much go hand in hand. These are often triggers of one another-having to have a beer or cocktail while eating and vice versa.

Coldness-This is one of the reasons people prefer a home-cooked meal, hot chocolate, or hot soup. This in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing if you have not eaten much all day long. However, it is not necessarily a good thing either.

The French Fry Debate: The Real Truth about Restaurant Food

January 31st, 2010

This article is dedicated to all of you who truly want to lose weight fast. You can shed unwanted pounds a little bit quicker than before but you seriously need to wake up.

Do you even realize what you are eating? Now, this blog entry is kind of harsh, and it is not meant as a personal attack at anyone. (Besides, the writer of this is no stranger to denial when it comes to the foods eaten that cause health problems.)

However, if you are truly concerned about your health and you want to lose weight fast (at a rate that is healthy of about one or two pounds per week) then pay attention. First off, those restaurant foods you eat in one sitting are actually more than enough-or at least enough-calories for an entire day.

So, how can you remedy this situation? Never go out to eat? That may not be any fun either. These days more restaurants are actually at least doing customers a better service by included nutritional facts with their menus.

However, there are other things that you can do. For instance, you can maybe order side items that you would share with another person or a group when you arrive. You can even ask for two plates and split your meal while there.

There are so many things that you can do to watch yourself. However, the last thing you should do is just be in total denial. It was, after all, a wake-up call for some people that certain gourmet coffee drinks alone cost hundreds of calories a day.

Also, do not fool yourself by eating a salad. You have the toppings to consider, as well as the dressing which often has 20 or more grams of fat in it. This is all something you need to think about before you make your next trip and plan your next night out.

Lose Weight Fast by Using these Tips

January 25th, 2010

In order to lose weight fast you need to know what you are putting into your body. So many preservatives and additives and harmful substances are ingested on a daily basis.

Here are some tips to help you lose weight fast:

Read the food labels. This will help you eliminate food that is harmful for your body. You should be particularly concerned about food products that are made with ingredients you cannot even pronounce. Some of these substances might be found in a very small amount. However, you need to know what you are putting into your body, so be careful.

Beware of starch and sugar. These substances are in just about all grains and pasta made from white flour. Corn and certain cereals are also very high in carbohydrates. Potatoes, rice, and snack cakes and cookies also have a lot of starch or sugar in them. Bread made from enriched flour is also a major problem area that puts on the pounds and cellulite.

Eat fresh/frozen foods. Instead of stocking up on canned goods that are usually loaded with preservatives try eating fresh and frozen foods. Particularly speaking, you should choose fresh and frozen veggies and fruit over canned ones. Be careful about choosing other types of frozen foods such as pizzas or TV dinners because they have quite a bit of fat, starch, sugar, and preservatives in them.

Find tasty low-calorie alternatives. For instance, you could perhaps substitute ham for salmon for dinner or you might try incorporating more tasty vegetarian side dishes. For a desert, flavored gelatin with whipped cream is great!

Eat high-fiber foods. This will keep your digestive system working so things move along quite nicely. In turn, a good digestive system will help you experience the full effect of the nutrients that are put into your body.

Cash for Weight Loss: Does it Help Shed Pounds?

January 14th, 2010

You probably have heard of people getting cash so they will quit smoking. However, have you ever heard of people getting cash for losing weight? You may not have but now it is happening all the time.

This all started a few years ago. Incentives for people to lose weight fast (or at least at a quicker pace than before) include one or more of the following: gift cards, vacation points, and of course the money!

How it Works

One example of incentives is an independent website that offers cash to people who lose a set amount of weight in a year. There are different levels of sign-up either for free or they might put money down to increase earnings if and when goals are met.

Similar programs are designed to help people in a similar way. Some of them require an up front deposit or wager while others do not. It all depends upon what type of weight loss incentive program you join.

Does this really work?

People who participate say that money is a motivator, because it is tangible. One person that has followed one of these incentive programs says it makes it tough to cheat on a diet, too.

However, most of these programs are on the honor system. Therefore, it can be easy for people to life. Perhaps in the future there will be some more stringent guidelines set by the hosts of certain “cash for weight loss” programs.
