Regarding Diet and Recession: U.S. Obesity Rate

It is interesting to note that even during a recession people can somehow manage to eat enough food in order to gain weight. This may seem like an oxymoron-a paradoxical reaction and way backwards to what a person would expect.

For example, even during tougher financial times obesity rates in 28 U.S. states are right now considerably higher. How can this be possible?

It could be speculated as to how this could happen, and this concept is not a new phenomenon. Here are all the possible reasons why people during the recession are gaining weight:

  • One major cause is the inability to afford higher-quality food. Either that or a person does not know how to shop for and obtain high-quality food at a lower price.
  • Perhaps the stress of the recession has caused people to have at least one “comfort” vice. People often eat when stressed out-and lack of money is a huge stressor.
  • More and more people are moving to places where more affordable housing is located. This may result in living in crowded areas with not much room for exercise.
  • Any cause for self-esteem drop may be an occasion for people to overeat. This is often the case in a recession (similar to the way people still manage to afford alcohol during tougher times).
  • Lower income often means taking whatever food is given to you. Although many food pantries offer supplies of healthy meal items, some of them offer mostly non-perishable heavily processed foods. This is one major cause of obesity in people-and cause of increased obesity rates since more people are seeking food assistance now.
  • This is a complex issue and needs to be further explored. For example, obesity rates may be higher within certain ethnic groups and not as high in others.

Further information regarding these studies will be published in the future. This is an interesting topic to follow in the news, isn’t it?
